What's Up?

Hi everyone. Happy 2026 and happy new month to you. It's Erika here, and if you don't know me by my name, you might know me by my blog  BioArtGal. If you don't know me by now, I'm a retired teacher who lives in New Hampshire, USA. I taught high school science for 36 years before I retired, and although I loved teaching, retirement is even better. I have no problems filling my time because besides making art, I enjoy walking, gardening, reading, spending time with my 2 dogs, traveling near and far as well as a few other things too.

It's a new month and a new year  so it's time for a new challenge here at Art Journal Journey. This month I'm hosting, and my theme is WHAT'S UP?

I wanted to pick a theme that could go two ways. Some people like direction, so if you want you can make pages about things that are up, like things in the sky, planes flying by or maybe even things on the top shelf of a closet. I'm sure you can think of lots of topics. But some people want a little more freedom, so I picked this phrase because in colloquial English, if you ask someone "What's up?" you might mean, what have you been doing, what's new with you, or even how are you? If there's something in your life you want to make a page about, that works with this phrase, even if it isn't about things that are up.

I hope you're inspired by this month's What's Up?  challenge and will join us over at Art Journal Journey this month.

  9. Thirty-six years in a high school classroom is a serious shift; it’s no wonder retirement feels like a win. There’s something great about finally having the time to actually look "up" instead of just managing a schedule. Your theme is smart because it covers everything from the literal sky to the mental clutter we’re all navigating. It’s a good reminder to check in with ourselves and see what’s actually going on behind the scenes of our daily routines.
